We donated the house to the Romanian authorities and worked together with them to make the project a great success. Unfortunately after thirteen years RAKE found itself in a position where our only option was to hand the project over fully to the Romanian authorities. Sadly and unbelievably they closed the home and returned the youngsters back to the institution.
Despite the passing of time and Romania joining the EU we were horrified to find that the quality of life for residents there remained unchanged. They are largely confined to their dormitories, have no personal belongings and no activities. Inappropriate sedation and physical abuse are widely used to maintain control.
After several years of being left empty the house is now being used by the local authorities to provide housing for 11 teenagers who cannot live at home due to social problems. We are delighted it is being used appropriately.
